  • The Three Patriarchs

    The Three Patriarchs

A Methodist preacher named Frederick Fisher named many of the most prominent place names of Zion National Park, such as the Great White Throne, Angels Landing, and The Watchman formation. Fisher and three companions explored Zion in 1916. He named this formation The Three Patriarchs for the three patriarchs of the Old Testament, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  • Angels Landing View

    Angels Landing View

Looking South down the Virgin River Valley. Angels Landing was named in 1916 when a group passing through the canyon commented that only an angel could land on top of it. The trail to the summit of Angels Landing was constructed in 1926 and includes a remarkable series of 21 short switchbacks called ''Walters Wiggles". It's a very thrilling trail to the top - some sections are only three to four feet' wide with over one thousand foot drop-offs on either side.

    Refrigerator Canyon

The trail back down from Angels Landing looking through refrigerator canyon towards the Grotto Area. This area offers a nice respite from the direct sunlight and heat at the beginning of the trail. It's best to start early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the hot sun!

  • The Narrows

    The Narrows

This is an awesome trail in Zion National Park. The Narrows trail begins at the end of the canyon roadway at the Temple of Sinawava stop. Take the Riverside Walk for a mile, and the trail starts in the Virgin River. Depending on the time of year, the river depth varies from thigh-deep to chest-deep. It's a beautiful hike on a hot summer day, as the river keeps you cool. The steep canyon walls do not let much sunlight in, especially as you get further into the canyon and it gets progressively narrower. The colors, steep canyon walls, and hiking through the river make this a memorable trip.
